God Knows Our Needs…from Tony West

I received this touching email from my husband this week, and I decided I would just post it as my next blog post. I am going to add in a few pictures as well. It blesses us so much that so many of you pray for us and support us through But God Ministries. We would not be able to daily reach out to so many people if believers weren’t faithful to trust God’s guidance. You all bless us as you lift us up. Thank you….

————————————————————————————–

Dear Mickie,

Tuesday, I had planned to have the day off. My plan was to get up early and read the Word with a cup of coffee. I did have one patient to see. Mirline had been in the clinic Monday night with a fever of 102. It was otitis media and horrible bronchitis. She had to have nebulizer treatments and medications to treat her infection, fever, and cough. I told her mom to bring her back Tuesday morning at 8:00 for another treatment.  (I did not expect her mom to have here at the exact appointment time).

Mirline<<<<This is Mirline in her little school uniform.

G came to the door at 8:00 to tell me that I had a patient to see. I misunderstood him. I thought he was talking about Mirline.  However, when I got outside, not only did I see Mirline, but I saw the waiting area was full of patients! There were 7 additional patients to see besides Mirline. They were all from the village where I went a few weeks ago with a midwife to a delivery.  They had to cross a river to get here. The river level is up right now, and the currents are strong. It was a dangerous trip for them. After crossing the river, they then had to walk another hour to get to the clinic for a total of about 3 hours of walking. There were 5 children and 2 adults.  The two adults were there because they brought the children. They had minor needs. Four of the children were very sick with fever and congestion. The other child had severe pain in her leg. She had to be carried in to the clinic.  They all were assessed and treated and discharged with a bag full of medications and a few treats. 🙂  The children all needed antibiotics. We had exactly what they needed. The girl with the leg pain needed more than ibuprofen or Tylenol for her pain. We had Darvocet and topical lidocaine patches for her leg. We had exactly what she needed. We gave her the medicine and prayed with her. Within the hour, she was almost pain free, and she WALKED out of the clinic!  One of the adults is the midwife that invited me to the delivery.  I was humbled that she trusted me to take care of her grandchild and neighbors. I am humbled that God uses me to touch the lives of so many people daily who would otherwise die without medical attention. I get to see His miraculous healing power every single day.  God is so good.

7 month old twins

This is a mother of twins who came to the clinic recently. Her children had never seen a doctor before. They will now receive regular check ups and health care. Praise God!

God has provided us with with all the right medications and supplies exactly when we needed them in order to care for the wonderful people of this community. When Dr. Sullivan was here a couple of weeks ago, he commented that we were better stocked than some of the family medicine clinics in Mississippi. Each time a team visits Hope Center we gain supplies, medications, skills, and years of clinical knowledge freely shared. I am so thankful for all of this. I am so blessed to be a part of what God is doing in Haiti.  One big need has been dental care. We have tons of supplies and equipment, and we have a huge need for dental care, but I just have no training in dentistry, so I haven’t been able to take advantage of what we have. Recently, God sent a team from Hattiesburg to Hope Center and a young dentist named Drew Middleton took me to school! He taught me how to assess dental needs and extract teeth! I am so thankful that God is providing not only the equipment and supplies to take care of the people of this community, but the training as well. I am just completely blown away by this. It’s additional confirmation that God is doing mighty works here in Galette Chambon. I am thankful to Drew and all of the other team members from all over the US who come here to share their gifts, talents, and expertise with us at Hope Center so that we can continue providing care to these beautiful people whom God loves.

Today we had a lady out in the waiting area that was lying on the steps of the dental clinic. I asked her come into the clinic to lay on the stretcher until I could see her. She said she had severe abdominal pain and that she had lost a baby earlier this week. Initially I thought maybe she had a miscarriage or had a baby die at birth. Neither was correct. Earlier in the week, she had an 18 month old child die suddenly. She didn’t know what illness the child had.  I assessed her and realized that her major  problem was grief. I treated her medical needs, gave her her medications, then I asked Ray Meany to spend some time with her.  (Ray is a dear friend of mine who I met through Samaritan’s Purse last year, and he has been visiting here with me all week.)  Ray’s training as a first responder chaplain was exactly what this woman needed. He spent time with her and discovered that she was not a Christian. He took time to share Jesus with her, and she accepted Christ!   We had exactly what she needed. God provided.  I thought Ray had come to Haiti to support me. Ha! Although he has been a lot of fun to have around while there has not been a team here, he has been tremendous with the patients while they wait patiently to see the doctor. Again, God is providing all of our needs.

It is great that we are meeting the needs of the people. But what I am more glad about is the fact that we are doing so through the love of Christ as outlined in 1 Corinthians 13, “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” This was validated a few weeks ago when I asked the community leaders how they thought things were going here at Hope Center. They said that they were very pleased with the care that their people were receiving, but they were especially pleased with how we were showing love and loving on their people.  That thrilled my heart.

congressmenApparently the leaders of the community of Galette Chambon are not the only ones noticing what God is doing here. Today some Haitian congressmen came to Hope Center for a visit. They had heard that wonderful things have been happening here, and they wanted to come see it for themselves. We had a fantastic visit, and I even got to treat three of them for health issues. As we gain trust among the leaders of this nation, we spread the good news that Jesus loves the people of Haiti, and that God can and will provide for their needs. By they way, I have invited the mayor of Ganthier and his family over for dinner when you and the boys get here. Be thinking of a real “American” meal to cook for them. Vladimir and I have both been bragging on your cooking. 🙂 They are looking forward to meeting you all and visiting with our family. I am looking forward to sharing my family with the mayor too!

Thanks for encouraging me to write about events of the week. It s helpful. I hope the message of the notes is clear…. God is proving everything we NEED. Trusting in Him is not a risk at all; it’s faith that is moving mountains.

I miss you and the boys very much!  I am counting down the days until you and the boys are home with me.

I am attaching a few more pictures that I thought you would enjoy sharing on the blog. Thanks for keeping that up. People need to know what God is doing here, and they need to know what to pray for.

Blessings to all….

Tony

I got a really big hug from Esther Geoffroi after I returned from my visit to the states in October. I was gone for 18 days and to Esther it must have seemed like an eternity. I know she is going to be very happy to see you and the boys when you get here. Everybody will be actually.

Long day

This father brought his little boy to the clinic a few weeks ago. They waited for a very long time before finally getting in to be seen. The boy was very hungry so I gave him a little can of Pringles. He fell asleep standing there with his hand in the jar.

He Walked Five Hours

His teeth were killing him but what could he do? He lives in a tiny village in the mountains of Haiti with no medical care anywhere close. Day after day he lived with the ever-present pain. Then, one day he heard about a medical clinic. A free medical clinic. But it was a long way from his village in the mountains and the only transportation he had were his two feet.

So, last week, he left his house at 2:00 a.m., walking in the dark to the medical clinic of But God Ministries. There, he saw a medical provider who pulled five, rotten, aching teeth. Within minutes his pain was gone. His life improved instantly. He was pain-free for the first time in months.

6,000 and Counting

The story of the man who walked five hours is just one of many. Almost every day men and women and boys and girls come to our clinic. So far, over 6,000 have come. They come with fevers, stomach aches, rashes, high blood pressure, rotten teeth, pregnant bodies, and countless other challenges. And every day, Tony West and our visiting medical-dental teams become the hands of Jesus and demonstrate the love of Christ to hurting people.

Recent Teams

The month of November saw two medical teams from Mississippi. The first team was from First Presbyterian Church in Hattiesburg. Their team included a dentist, a pediatric dentist, a dermatologist, and an OB-GYN. They treated over 500 patients in the medical clinic and over 100 dental patients.

The second team was from both First Baptist Jackson and First Baptist Hattiesburg. This team included an internist and two nurses. They also saw over 500 patients. In addition, members of this team built a house, conducted Vacation Bible School, and showed the Jesus Film every night.

Best Part

For over a year we have been sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with countless people in Central Haiti. We have shared it in Bible studies, worship services, Bible schools, the Jesus Film, at the medical-dental clinic, and during one-on-one encounters. Lots of sowing has taken place.
But last week there was some reaping. There was a glorious harvest as almost 100 people professed faith in Christ. These were not merely groups of people raising their hands, but individuals making strong decisions to follow Jesus. To paraphrase Jesus in Luke 15:10, there was rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God when those Haitians repented and turned to Christ last week.

Getting an Education

Because so many Christians in America sponsored children for scholarships, we have children at two different schools. I was able to visit these two schools this week and see the children.

The Importance of a Job

I was talking to a Haitian man earlier this week about his job as a security guard at the orphanage. He was very excited to be working. He said to me, “When you are working your home is happy.”

He’s right. Our homes are happy when we can work and provide food and shelter and clothing and the basics of life. That’s true in America and it’s true in Haiti.

This past Tuesday I was able to announce that 11 men from the area would be hired on Monday to make blocks using the brick press. The blocks will be used to build the church we will start building in January. Eleven families will be greatly blessed as a result of the opportunity to work. Eleven homes will be much happier!

Beautiful Children

Everywhere we look in Haiti we see beautiful, smiling children. While we are seeking to provide opportunities in Haiti today, ultimately our work is for the futures of these children and their children.

Their names are Tessie, Ernise, and Mirline. You have to
love their smiles!

What It’s All About

Today I sit anxiously awaiting the return of one of the teams that has been at Hope Center this week. It’s a team from Jackson, and not only do they have the remainder of the clay orders, but they have PICTURES from this week’s mission events!!! I can’t wait to see them and share them with all of you!! I have many stories to tell, but I want to put pictures with the ones I share. Stay tuned…..I

In the meantime, there is one story I cannot withhold from you because it completely melted my heart. This week has been a very tiring week for Tony, both physically and emotionally. It was his first week back (seems like an eternity to me), and he set foot back on Haitian soil with a team from Hattiesburg, Ms, there to run a medical clinic and dental clinic in tandem. This is exciting because we have seen soooo many people who desperately needed dental attention. On top of that, Tony has looked forward to learning many things from the dental team so that he can continue to meet the dental needs of the people of our village. We have a very nice dental clinic with tons of supplies and such, but he had no idea what we had and how to use it. He looked forward to being schooled this week…..and that is exactly what happened. Well, that and much, much more of course. Tony is so excited to know how to pull teeth now, and he can do it without causing pain to his patients, so that is really exciting. Thank you, Lord, for once again for Your provision!!

In addition to getting to learn in the dental clinic, we had a rather extensive medical team at Hope Center that included several doctors, including a dermatologist. Isn’t it amazing to know that God is providing not just general medical care to the people of this village, but specialty care….and FREE! These are people who get up early in the morning, many before daylight, and walk for hours in the dark with only the light of kerosene in a vegetable can to try to see a doctor. They will wait not just for hours, but some will wait all day long to see a doctor about a need that they have been having to ignore for months because they could not afford to get medical attention anywhere else. There are many unusual skin conditions in Haiti that need medical attention, so having a dermatologist there to see about these specific needs is such a blessing!! And here’s the biggest blessing….in just four days, this medical team saw over 500 patients and the dental team treated about 150 patients. Now THAT is exciting!!

Needless to say, for Tony, who is not only helping with the medical teams now, but he has also taken on many more administrative tasks now that I am not there, is very tired today. There have been meetings upon meetings upon meetings all week long with groups and individuals as we take care of other needs in the village besides medical care. There have been meetings about the orphanage, meetings about the school, meetings about a church BGM is helping to build, and meetings about general activities going on around Hope Center. It’s a lot to take in and a huge load to carry. I have prayed and prayed for my precious husband as he has flexed his administrative muscles this week. He is so compassionate, yet very detail oriented, and that is what makes him so good at what he does, but it can also be very tiring. Well, our God is a loving, compassionate God, and He knows that Tony needs a fresh touch from Him on a daily basis. God uses so many people and situations to do just that….every day. I am so thankful that my husband is in the hands of such a loving and personal God. This leads me to the story I want to share with you….

Yesterday, Tony and Vladimir went into the village for yet another meeting at one of the schools there. It was a difficult meeting, but God led the meeting and God provided the needed words to communicate what Tony needed to communicate. Hallelujah! After the meeting, Tony and Vladimir were walking along the dusty pathways through the village on their way back to Hope Center, and they were having a conversation about why we do what we do. He began to share with Vladimir about the scripture in Matthew 25, verses 31-40 where it says,

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

After sharing this passage with Vladimir, Tony said, “When we take care of the sick; when we give people water; when we give them clothes to wear and food to eat; when we love on the lonely and give hugs to the hurting, we don’t do it for our own glory or to gain points with God or anyone else. When we do these things, we are sharing the real love of JESUS. We do these things because the love of Jesus is INSIDE of us, and in our love and reverence to Him, His Love pours out of us to others. THAT is why we do what we do.”

Just as Tony was saying this, an elderly woman came running across an open field towards where Tony and Vladimir were walking. She was waving her arms in the air and yelling something they couldn’t understand. They stopped and awaited her approach because they knew she was coming to them. When she reached them, she began to hug on Tony, kiss his cheeks, and tears were streaming down her face. He understood some of what she was saying as she cried out, “Mesi Jesi, mesi Jesi!” (Thank you Jesus) Vladimir began to interpret to Tony what she said after this. She was saying, “I came to you in the clinic, and I was sick and you prayed with me and gave me medicine, and now I am well. I was so thirsty and you gave me a drink of water. I was hungry and you gave me some crackers to eat while I waited. Thank you, thank you, thank you Jesus for sending this man to our village.” Oh my goodness, I can hardly type right now for the tears filling my eyes. The screen goes blurry and my fingers shake. God sent this precious woman to assure Tony that what he was explaining to Vladimir was right on point. God assured Tony and Vladimir both through this woman that His Word is ALIVE, and His Word is being acted out every single day at Hope Center, and He DOES bless it. As if this wasn’t enough to knock their sandals off, they continued on their journey back to Hope Center and a middle aged farmer approached them as they were nearing the soccer field. He went to Tony and shook his hand in the usual Haitian fashion. Theirs is not a casual shake of one hand to another. They take your hand in theirs, then touch your arm or hand with their other hand as if to say, “I want to bless you with BOTH hands.” As the man shook Tony’s hand, he asked about Jacob. Tony explained that Jacob is not in Haiti right now, but he is coming back in a few weeks. The man proceeded to tell Tony and Vladimir that he misses seeing Jacob in the village. He said that Jacob would always stop and talk to him and practice his Creole with him and teach him English words so they could communicate better with one another. Then the man said, “One day I was hungry and Jacob went to his house and got some food for me. I was also thirsty and he also brought me something to drink. God used Jacob to bless me, and I appreciate it very much. I really do miss that boy.” Tony and Vladimir were both just amazed at what they were hearing. It wasn’t that they were surprised that Jacob ministered to this man and we never even knew it; it was that once again God sent someone to confirm His Word to them….”Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” God was once again confirming His blessings upon our work there and assuring Tony that He has used and will continue to us ALL of us in His plan.

Tony and Vladimir continued on their journey to Hope Center with a renewed and refreshed spirit. God sent these people along the pathway to bless them in return for their blessings to His people. His blessings are fresh and new every single day. We praise Him for being ACTIVE in our lives and taking care of every single detail. We praise Him with all that we have, all that we are, and all that we do. Oh how He loves us!!

Stay tuned for pictures of the week!!!

Life on the Hill

The location where we have built the first 20 houses is called the Hill. Twelve families have moved to the Hill from a tent city and life has dramatically improved for these families. I was in Haiti the first of this month and saw some wonderful developments:

Dale Kennon of FBC Jackson, MS on the steps
of one of the houses on the Hill. The people have done a great job with their landscaping.

Last month, I shared with you how the families have been growing gardens. These gardens are continuing to develop.  I am standing with Gina in front of her family’s garden.

Another resident on the hill in front of his garden.

Two happy little girls grabbed me and gave me a friendly hug while I was walking on the Hill.

While there a few weeks ago, a mission team from Jackson, MS held our first Ladies Conference for the women living on the hill. They also held a VBS for the children on the Hill as well as Family Night for all who wanted to come.

Pictured are some of the ladies on the first day of the Bible Study. Since we were operating on “Haitian time,” only about half the ladies had shown up when it was scheduled to start! Before the week was over, about 8 of the ladies professed faith in Christ!!

After the Bible Study, the ladies did a craft. Each one made a beautiful purse. They loved those purses!

Lots of children at the afternoon VBS

VBS was too much for this little fella!

Family night was a great time of fun and laughter. As I watched, I thought how much better this was than just a few weeks earlier when these people were living in the filth and heat and hopelessness of the tent city.

Paddle ball and other games were enjoyed by all during Family Night. Looking on is Lillian Brown of Madison, MS. She planned and led the Ladies Bible Study, the VBS, and Family Night.
The last night we were there a few weeks ago, the ladies from the Hill all walked down to The Hope Center. They knew we were leaving the next morning. They told us they wanted to pray for us! I couldn’t believe it. We pray for them. We try to bless them. And now, they were wanting to pray for us.

They formed a circle and invited us into the circle. Then, before praying for us, they began to sing. I still don’t speak Creole, but I immediately recognized the tune. They were singing that old hymn, “He hideth my soul in the cleft off the rock.” Then they prayed for us. They thanked God for our work and asked Him to provide us wisdom, strength, and protection. Overwhelming joy is the only way I can describe how it felt to be prayed for by these ladies. What a blessing!

Scholarships, School, and Supplies

We ended up with scholarships and supplies for over 200 children. I went to Port-au-Prince with one of the leaders of the school to purchase paper, pens, pencils, and workbooks for many of the children.

Salomon and me holding samples of some of the supplies we bought for the school children

Salomon and me standing in front of a chalkboard at the school. Notice the old wooden benches, the dirt floor, and the tin roof. Not exactly an ideal learning setting. They have poured the footings for a new school but do not have the funds to complete it. We hope that one day we may be able to help them complete it.
The Joy of a Job

Mickie West, the wife of our on-site, American nurse, sent me the following email two weeks ago. My heart was greatly encouraged:

“Stan, Mackil (one of the men on the Hill) pulled me aside and said that he is very concerned about finding a job. He explained to me that he is a very hard worker and loves to work and wants to work, but he doesn’t know how or where to find a job since he is not from that area. This touched my heart deeply. I told him that I would pray for God to provide work for him.

“That evening, I was talking to Doug (of the Pensacola team) and I told him about the conversation I had with Mackil. The next morning, Doug came to me and said he wanted to hire Mackil and two other men from the Hill to work at the orphanage while he is here. We went up on the hill to get Mackil and he was sitting on his porch having his breakfast. We introduced him to Doug and told him that Doug wanted him to work for him at the orphanage for a couple of weeks.

“Stan, that whole family began to rejoice. His wife, Emmanuella, began to cry and praise God with her face against the wall of their house. It was a very joyful sight. Then I said, ‘Okay, well, let’s get ready to get to work!’ and Emmanuella went into the house and got his work shoes and ball cap, he quickly drank the rest of his coffee, and called over to two of the other men to come work with him. He was rushing around with such excitement!! Tears began to spill down my face as I watched the urgent activity going on around his house as the entire family helped him get ready for work. Oh my, how exciting it was. Doug says Mackil is a very hard worker and he works without complaining. Of course, I wasn’t surprised about that.”

If you have a job, thank God for it and please pray that all the Haitians in and near our community will get jobs.

Orphanage Update

The two churches from Pensacola who are building the orphanage have spent the last two weeks finishing some of the outside of the four buildings as well as working on the inside.

The kitchen in the new orphanage
Medical Care

Through Tony West and visiting medical teams, we continue to provide ongoing medical care. Not only are we hosting clinics at The Hope Center, but one day a week we are taking the clinic to more remote locations where people rarely get medical care.

Two weeks ago we had two pediatricians, two pediatric nurses, and a Physician’s Assistant hosting a clinic. Last week we had several nurses helping with a clinic. Next week we will have two Emergency Room doctors hosting a clinic. All three of these groups are from Pensacola, FL.

The little girl is Abigalle. She is being held by Kirsten who is a member of the Pensacola medical team. Abigalle is a 4 year old that came in with horrible wheezing and fast breathing. She had been sick for a week. Our medical team gave her 3 nebulizer treatments, steroids, and antibiotics on Tuesday and asked her to come back on Friday. She came back and was doing much, much better!

Update on Matching Gift
We are well on our way to reaching the $50,000 goal for the matching gift from the Christian businessman. As of last weekend, we had received $41,890 (not counting some designated gifts such as school scholarships). That leaves us $8,110 to go between now and the end of this month (8 days).

And Finally

Our work and ministry continue to grow and expand. Many new things are on the horizon. Countless people will be blessed as we go about making a difference in a thoughtful, systematic way.  Our sustainable community is developing right before our eyes.

However, it takes resources to do this kind of work. Last month, I announced that we have a feature on our website that allows someone to automatically give each month. All you have to do is sign up one time. Just click here to give each month ($25, $50, $100, $200, or any amount you choose) or to give a one-time contribution. You can also mail your gift to: But God Ministries, 1440 North State Street, Jackson, MS, 39202.

God Confirms our Path

It never fails to amaze me how God sends a Word to us at just the right time when we cry out to Him and ask for His perfect peace. As you can imagine, the struggle and turmoil I have dealt with in my spirit as we have made this move back to the states has been excruciating. I have fought it in my spirit every step of the way.

First of all, I did not want to leave my husband in Haiti. Although the place where we live is not a dangerous place, and we have most of the comforts of home, it is still not easy to live there. The hardest part I think is the language barrier. For Tony, having to depend on a translator day in and day out in order to diagnose and treat the hundreds of people he sees each week is exhausting both mentally and physically. There seem to be constant misunderstandings and confusion around every corner just because of the lack of the ability to communicate freely. That is actually getting better as he is learning the language more and more, but I just wish I could be there by his side to help him through it. Secondly, I have argued and argued with God over this because I can’t understand why He would call us all to Haiti, then have me and Jacob return to the states after just 3 months! When we committed to go, we committed to GO AND STAY! So why bring me and Jacob back here when we had worked so hard to build a good relationship with the families on the hill and the families in the village? I just couldn’t understand. I cried out to God asking for the soccer opportunities to happen there in Haiti, but all I got was silence. I was getting so very frustrated because I wanted to be able to continue the ministry I had begun, but I knew I needed to make the right decision for Jacob’s future as well. I needed reassurance that going back to the US was indeed what GOD wanted us to do and not just us giving in and not being patient. Well, today I received my confirmation that we are indeed where he wants us to be.

I don’t know if you remember or not, but in my story about how we were called into this ministry, I spoke about how God led me into a study of the book of Nehemiah right after Tony was called to go to Haiti for the first time. This was two years ago. God showed me through this study that He was going to involve us in a HUGE rebuilding of an area of Haiti that would involve the efforts of many people and a great deal of organization. I took notes as I studied and then shared them with Tony. All Tony could say was, “Well, that’s big!” We had no idea what BIG thing God was going to do with us, but He eventually led us to But God Ministries, and He led us to surrender to full time missions to go to Haiti as a part of a HUGE plan that was just as He had shown us through my study of Nehemiah.

Well today, God led me back into the book of Nehemiah. In Nehemiah 11, verses 1-2, it says, “Now the leaders of the people lived in Jerusalem. and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in Jerusalem the holy city, while nine out of ten remained in the other towns. and the people blessed all the men who willingly offered to live in Jerusalem.” When I read this, I immediately began to apply it to our situation and thought about the fact that right now, our family has decided that what is best for all of us is to let Tony remain in Haiti, and the rest of us live in the US for school for a season. (I still have a hard time even typing this, but I know now that God is definitely behind this plan.) As I usually do, I began looking at some commentary on these verses and this is what I found: “Being a true leader isn’t always glamorous. There are not always hundreds of people lining up, wanting to be just like you. This can be witnessed in the book of Nehemiah. We read that the leaders lived in Jerusalem and the rest drew lots. Nehemiah is the account of the rebuilding of Jerusalem. During the restoration, enemies threatened to attack it as the wall and gates were rebuilt; it wasn’t necessarily the safest place. That is one reason the average Joe didn’t immediately sign up to live there. Jerusalem living also meant leaving a previous place of residence, which had one’s farm and livelihood. At this point, Jerusalem was not yet finished and life there would have been difficult. These leaders made a sacrifice. Someone had to live there and start the process of creating a once again bustling city. Could this be what leadership is often about? Not asking people to take a risk for you, but rather taking one for them? Jesus even said that He came to serve and to not be served (Matthew 20:28). That is what leading is. We learn how to do this in its purest of forms through Jesus and his substitutionary death on the cross. He calls us to lay down our lives for others, because He has laid down His for us (John 15:13).”

Oh my! As I read this, my heart began to beat faster and I began to cry as I realized that God was indeed confirming that the sacrifice that my family is making to live separately for a little while is exactly what God wants us to do! It was His plan all along! When I wrote my last blog post to explain to everyone what we had decided to do, I entitled it “Making Sacrifices.” I have come to realize now that this sacrifice we are making is part of what God has called us to do! As with every other trial we walk through, Jesus has gone before us. He knows how it feels! He sacrificed His place with the Father to come here and make a way for us! He knows what it’s like to leave a place where He felt He was supposed to be in order to provide for His children and do what was best for them….us! In showing me this scripture today, and leading me to this commentary, God was telling me that He DOES go before us, and He IS in this! We ARE doing what He wants us to do, and He WILL bless our sacrifice. That’s all I needed to know. Today I have a refreshed vision and a clear purpose. Whatever He wants to accomplish in this move and separation period, He WILL accomplish, and we HONOR Him when we obey – even when that obedience is very difficult.

I don’t know what God has in store for our family in the coming days and months, but I do know that we are still in His hands. Jacob and I have started having a Bible study together over breakfast every day, and today I was able to share with him this amazing confirmation from God that we are doing the right thing. He too was relieved to hear it. We talked yesterday about how strange it felt to register for school and know that he will be back in the classroom and playing soccer this week. We talked about how we wish we knew for sure that we had made the right decision. Today God answered that plea to know. We have a peace now, and we are growing closer to our Father as we cling to Him for guidance and strength.

Thank you all so much for the encouragement and prayers you send our way. Your obedience to share that encouragement is a constant reminder to us of God’s love and protection. God is good…..ALL THE TIME!

Walking in HIS steps….

Making Sacrifices

Today we want to let all of you know about a decision our family has made that is going to mean a great deal of sacrifice and change for our family once again. It was an excruciating decision to make, but we believe it is the right decision for the time being.

When we answered the call to missions and the specific call to serve at Hope Center in Gallet Chambon, we knew that this would be a difficult thing for our 16 year old son, Jacob. As we have said before, out of all four of us, Jacob is perhaps the one who has sacrificed the most in this move. He said goodbye to his school, friends, church, his dog, the only home he has ever known, and the sport that has been his life for 13 years – the sport he has dreamed of as his future. When we told Jacob we were moving to Haiti, he didn’t complain, he didn’t lash out, and he didn’t question. He just moved in faith with us, waiting on the Lord to show us and him what He wanted to do with Jacob through this move as well. We knew that God wanted to do a work in Jacob in Haiti as well, so we all left in faith that God would show us His plan in time.  We feel strongly that God gave Jacob unique athletic abilities, particularly in the sport of soccer, for a reason. We have believed for many years that God plans to use those abilities for years to come in Jacob’s life. Jacob’s strongest desire is to be able to continue to play soccer in college one day. When we moved to Haiti, we were led to believe that he would be given many opportunities to play soccer there and that these opportunities might even present him with more exposure to colleges in the US than he would get otherwise. We decided to give it some time and just wait to see what opportunities he would get while living in Haiti. So before we left, we told Jacob that we would leave the door open for him to return to the US at some point to be able to go to school and play soccer if things didn’t work out for him to play in Haiti.

Not long after we moved to Haiti, Jacob did indeed get to play some soccer. Coach Peterson, a Haitian national coach, invited Jacob to play in two games in Cap Haitian. We had to fly to Cap Haitian because it is an 8 hour drive from Ganthier over some dangerous terrain. It was expensive, but it was also an opportunity we could not pass up for Jacob. The two games he played in were All-Star games that had been put together after a summer-long series of games that took place all over Haiti.  He played in both games and did an amazing job. The crowd went nuts every time he got the ball. It was so cool seeing him interact with boys his age and play as a team even though they didn’t share the same language. We were pleasantly surprised by how well he played because just a week before we moved to Haiti, we discovered that Jacob had a serious ankle injury that was threatening to get worse if he didn’t strengthen the muscles in his ankle and let it heal. After the games in Cap Haitian, we returned to Ganthier and waited to hear from the coach about getting on a team closer to home. We realized that although it was great to get to play in Cap Haitian, we could not afford to keep returning there to play. The coach talked about getting him on a team in Port au Prince or Croix du Bouquet, but after several weeks passed, nothing ever happened. Slowly but surely, Jacob began to get more and more homesick because he was not playing the game he loves. However, he continued to trust that God had a purpose for his being in Haiti during this time. Our prayer was, “Lord show us TODAY what you want us to do, and we will trust that You hold the future in Your hands.”

Jacob decided to walk each day in faith that God would heal him emotionally, physically, and spiritually as we waited on Him to show us what He wanted us to do. Each day Jacob and I would have school from about 8:30 to 3:00 and then we would join the visiting mission team in whatever activities or ministries they had come to do. During that time, Jacob learned how to do many things that he would not have known to do otherwise. He learned about cabinetry, using power tools, electricity, medicine, and daily ministering to the needs of the people of our village. It would bless my heart to see him working along side the Godly men that God would send our way. It would bless me even more when I saw him working alongside his daddy in the clinic, helping to calm adults and children alike while they waited for Tony to take care of their medical needs. For weeks Jacob grew and grew. Although he wasn’t getting to play soccer or even work out much physically, he was growing in ways we couldn’t see with our eyes. Everyone that spent time with him fell in love with him, and Tony and I knew God was teaching him and healing him in many ways.

October came and we realized it was getting time to make a decision about what Jacob would do. Soccer season was starting soon, and if he was going to play, we would have to prepare for his return to the states because it was obvious he wasn’t getting to play in Haiti like we had hoped. We asked Jacob what he wanted to do, and he was clearly torn. He had developed some very strong relationships there at Hope Center that would be very hard to leave. Vladimir has become like a brother to him. G has become a true friend that enjoys singing and laughing with him. Mathurin spends time with us each day drinking Koolade and making silly faces for the camera. Esther makes special dishes for him that she knows he loves. And visiting teams go on and on about what a wonderful young man our son is and what a joy it is to see a young person so compassionate and friendly with adults. Yes, Jacob has grown tremendously. He has matured and learned a lot about serving others.

Jacob has also healed physically. Over the years Jacob has injured almost every muscle group in his body. Every time he gets injured, he makes himself play past his pain and grabs short opportunities to heal, but he has not actually given his body a good break in over 10 years! In the past three months, however, Jacob has been able to let his body rest. Although I am sure his stamina has suffered, his muscles, joints, and bones have had an opportunity to get some much needed rest. Now he can rebuild his cardio stamina and muscle strength by daily training and working out, and once he gets back to playing, he will be like new.

With all of this in mind, Tony and Jacob and I prayed together and asked God to lead us to what was best for our family and our son at this particular time. After asking God for guidance, Tony told me that Jacob must return and he had a peace about that. We decided that because we are his parents, and God has given to him to us to raise up to become the Godly man he was meant to be, one of us needs to stay with Jacob while he is in school. We decided that I would return with him because the specific calling God gave our family was to move to Haiti and run the medical clinic and oversee daily operations. That is Tony’s forte and he loves it. God has been preparing Tony for just this thing for years now, and we can see that clearly.

With all of this decided, Jacob and I returned to the states on Wednesday, October 17th, and he will start back to school on Wednesday, October 24th. I cannot begin to describe what a difficult week this has been for us. Last Sunday, we went to church at the little village church where we have begun attending. At the end of the service, I went before the membership and explained what we had decided and asked that they support my husband in our absence and that they pray for our family. They all verbally committed to do just that. They all came and hugged us after the service and told us how much they love us. It was such a beautiful time. Monday Jacob and I went up on the hill and took pictures of all of the school children on their first day of school, then we walked them to school and watched the principal/pastor get them all set up in their new classes. Here’s a picture of the kids before school and Jacob walking them to school.

Jacob walking the children on the hill to school on their first day of school in their new home village. Tessi took Jacob by the hand and didn’t let go until it was time for her to be a big girl and walk into the school with her friends. Precious.

We took a picture of most of the children on the front porch of one of their houses before heading off to school. The boys didn’t have their uniforms yet, but they did get all dressed up for school. They were so excited!

The next day, Tuesday, all of the children came by Hope Center on their way home from their second day of school. They wanted to show us their books they got at school. Each one pulled out a stack of books they had been assigned. They were so very proud of their books. Jacob and I could not hold back the tears as we looked into their hopeful eyes and thought about the fact that we would be leaving the next day. When they saw the tears flowing, theirs began to flow too and one of the older boys said, “Pa kriye. Nou wè ou pita.” (Don’t cry. We will see you later.) We were ALL crying by then, even the mother who had brought them by to see us. I explained to the mother, Emmanuella, that as mothers sometimes we have to make sacrifices for our children that are hard, but we know that the sacrifice we make is what is best for our child. In the long run, a few months is but a very short time compared to the years ahead for our children. She nodded and told me she understood and that this was the very reason she moved her family to Gallet Chambon.

So Jacob and I have now moved back to Brandon for a long visit I like to say. Thanks to the amazing generosity of our home buyer, we are able to stay here for several weeks until we can work out something more permanent. Tony will be here on October 25th and he will get to be with us for 18 days! We will cherish every single one of those days too. Jacob will re-enroll in school this next week and immediately start back to soccer. Right now he his conditioning twice a day to get his body back in shape for the season to start. We have enjoyed several visits with Jonathan too so far and that has been so nice. He came over for lunch today and the three of us ate sandwiches and talked until he had to head back to school. We have missed him so much. Getting to see him play a guitar solo at the Movement last night was a treat I have missed so much. Tony will be joining us each week too since the Movement is streamed live on the internet!

Please pray for our family as we prepare for this time of separation and adjustment. We all have a peace that God is still leading us and showing us where He wants us to be. Tony absolutely LOVES his work at the clinic at Hope Center, and he is making a difference in the lives of many, many people there. God is growing him and using him in mighty, mighty ways every single day, and that is an amazing place to be! You can see it in his face below that he loves where he is right now.

Tony shaking the hand of a farmer from the village. This gentleman also goes to our church and his son is the man who had the machete injury and Tony stitched up his knee and gave him a brace and crutches. He is all well now and back to work!

The teams that come in each week from all over the country love on him and they enjoy sharing and learning from one another. We talk with Tony every night since we have a US land line there at the house at Hope Center. We also text often during the day. We are going to try to work it out so that either we go there to visit or he comes here at least once every couple of months. This will put a huge strain on the budget, but we also know that God will sustain us. Again, one day we will look back and see that this time was very short in the grand scheme of things. My mother explained things to me so well when she replied to an email I sent her expressing my anguish over leaving….”Yes, your ministry is important, and yes, Jacob’s situation is important, and yes, your separation from Tony is important. But the question is, can any of this be changed?  Seems to me at this moment of this day that first, you are going to have to leave the ministry you’ve started but will therefore be placed with a new job pertaining to that – and that will be finding a way to continue without actually being there in person.  Second, Jacob will one day know beyond a shadow of a doubt what real sacrifice is…when he is a parent and is faced with parental sacrifice for the good of his child, he will make the right decision because he saw you and Tony make the right decision even though it hurt your heart….’God’s way is not always my way, but I KNOW that His way is the best way, and it’s the way I would choose if I knew all that God knows.’ Praise the Lord for HIS OMNISCIENCE! He is all-wise, all-knowing, all-powerful, and ALL LOVE; therefore everything He does and allows is motivated by His Agape love – that love that is so deep, wise, and strong that we as human beings cannot even understand it!”  I am so blessed to have such a wise and understanding mother. She has been so very supportive to me and my husband through every single step of this journey. She has loved Tony as her own and she has shared many wise words and encouragement to both of us. And she is SOOOO right. God gave our boys to us to raise up to be Godly young men who will make a difference for the kingdom of God one day themselves. We have always prayed fervently over the decisions we have had to make regarding their lives and their future. This time is no different. I will find a way to continue to be a part of the ministry there at Hope Center as well as be here to prepare our boys for their future. God is leading the way. He goes before us and leaves His footprints for us to follow.

We do appreciate your prayers and your support as we continue on in this journey. We will continue to include you by sharing pictures and stories of all of the many victories and miracles God performs through Tony and the visiting missionaries to Hope Center at  Gallet Chambon, Ganthier, Haiti. We praise the Lord for His provision and His strength. He will see us though!!

Walking in His Steps,

Mickie West  (and Tony, Jonathan, & Jacob)

The Park Place Team – Sept. 8-15

Hello everyone! The reason it has been so long since my last blog is because the connection we have in Haiti is not strong enough or secure enough for me to be able to login to WordPress. I have been trying to get it worked out, but I just don’t have a whole lot of time to play with it. Because of this, I have had to wait until we make trips to the US to post. Fortunately, Facebook doesn’t have the security restrictions that WordPress has, so I have been able to update many of you with the posts I often put on Facebook to see what all we have going on. However, there are also many who do not use Facebook, so I am going to sort of recap some things here for those who have not seen everything I have been posting on Facebook. I have decided to do it week by week starting with the Park Place team in early September.

God has been doing many, many exciting things in our midsts at Hope Center in Ganthier, Haiti, over the last few weeks! I will go back to the beginning of September and recap many of the things that have happened as best I can.

The team from Park Place with the Hope Center Team. (L to R) Jeff, G, Charles, Mike, Tony, Al, Vladimir, Jacob, & Eddie

In VBS, Jeff would present the children with a very simple gospel message that they could easily remember and understand. It was a precious time for all of us.

On September 8, a team from Park Place Baptist Church in Pearl, MS, arrived at Hope Center. It always amazes and thrills me how God goes before us and knows what our needs will be long before we do. He has sent just the right people at just the right time over and over again, and this was again the case with the four men from Park Place. The game plan for this team was to do maintenance work around Hope Center in the mornings and VBS in the afternoons. In just one week, this team of men installed an automatic switch on the generator, installed a water filter for our entire water system, moved the light in the work shed to give the whole room better lighting, fixed a wiring problem in the mission house, installed several outlets in the breezeway, creating a charging station for not only tools but cell phones (this was one of the most popular things they did! Ha!), installed a ceiling fan and the dishwasher in Esther’s kitchen, and they loved on the children who recently moved into the houses on the hill in VBS every afternoon.

The generator switch was the most pressing need. Installing this would automatically convert us from city power to generator whenever the city power stops. This installation has already saved a significant amount of money on fuel costs because we are using the generators less and less. One cool thing that happened this week for me was seeing Jacob and Michael Gibbs work together to fix a wiring issue in the house. For several weeks, we were experiencing some shocking around a few outlets in our house. As a matter of fact, one wall in Jacob’s room had become so charged that he touched the wall one time and it knocked him down! Michael showed Jacob how to use a meter that checked the voltage in certain places in the house and they traced the source of the problem which was a pinched wire in an outlet in the master bedroom. Michael and Jacob fixed the problem, and then I had the privilege of watching the two of them pray and thank God for showing them the problem and allowing them to fix it safely. It was a beautiful sight seeing a Godly man take time to teach Jacob a skill that he will probably use other times in his life and then turn it into a praise moment as they gave the glory to God for their success. Michael’s obedience to God not only fixed a serious problem, but it allowed him to minister to my son in a very special way.

These four men worked so hard this week, and in the afternoon it became fun time as Jeff shared the gospel with the children in very creative ways and we played with all of the toys the men brought in recreation out in the courtyard. Each day the children would show up around 3:00 and Jacob and I would join Jeff in the courtyard for recreation. We would play frisbee, t-ball, soccer, jump rope (the jump ropes became microphones as the girls gave us concerts), and nerf football. After about 30 minutes of play, we would all go to the breezeway for Bible study. Each day, Jeff had a new story to tell the children. He started with creation and gave them a world sticker to remember that God created the heavens and the Earth. Then he gave them an apple silly band to remind them of the story of Adam and Eve and how sin entered the world. On the third day, he gave them a little kazoo after he told them about the birth of the long awaited messiah, Jesus, and how the angels rejoiced at his birth because Jesus was the son of God, born to become the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. On the fourth day, Jeff gave them a necklace that had a cross and beads that represented the gospel message. He recapped the message and told them about Jesus dying on the cross and defeating the grave as Savior of the world. On the last day, he gave them a little bottle of bubbles and showed them how when you blow on the stick, the bubbles don’t stay where they are. They float off in many directions carrying fun to others around them. This represents our job as Christians to tell others about Jesus. Once we know the good news of Jesus, we don’t need to just let it “sit around bottled up.” We need to let it spread around for others to hear and come to know and enjoy the good news as well. It was a simple message, but the kids got it! They LOVED the review time as Jeff asked them questions about the message the day before. They were eager to recount what they remembered and learned. What a blessing! They also LOVED song time. Jeff played the guitar and the kids sang songs like “Yes, Lord!” and “Lord, I Lift Your Name on High.” Still to this day the children ask me about when Jeff is coming back. He obviously made a great impression on our “Children on the Hill.”

On Sunday we went up to the village of Thoman for church. After church we sang songs with the children and they made these pictures. They loved the song “Yes Lord!”

Another big improvement the men from Park Place accomplished was installing Esther’s dishwasher and ceiling fan. The Great Bridge Team from Virginia had purchased Esther a dishwasher, but time ran out and we were not able to get it installed. The guys from Park Place not only installed it, but they hung a ceiling fan in the kitchen to help with some of the heat. A lot of work takes place in that room! These hard working teams must eat, and Esther makes sure that happens. Here is a picture of Esther beside her dishwasher in her kitchen. It is amazing how many things have happened here in just a few short weeks. It is because God sends teams specifically equipped for the work He wants done here. He not only wants to bless the people of the village of Gallet Chambon, but He wants to make the work of the teams here as productive as possible. The conveniences He has allowed to come here insure that each week is the most productive it can be. Thank you Lord for so many amazing blessings!

Here is Esther posing beside her dishwasher. This is a rare convenience in Haiti. But it allows us to clean quickly and sanitize all plates, utensils, etc. It not only makes Esther’s job a little easier, but it makes things safer as

There were many, many praise moments we shared with these four precious men. We are so thankful that God not only called them to come bless our ministry, but He equipped each one specifically for the task He wanted accomplished in this particular week. He used them to fix problems, add conveniences, and minister to the people of not only our village but the village of Thoman as well.

As I look back on the things this team accomplished, I am overwhelmed with amazement as I recognize that God does go before us! He knows our needs and He is already preparing His people to be used by Him to meet those needs. When people recognize His call and they say, “Yes! I will go!” He takes care of the rest. If you believe that God is calling you to go, don’t wait to know the details. Just say yes and he will show you when it’s time. Sometimes He reveals that purpose months before you go, and sometimes He saves a little bit of information to reveal to you once you get there. Our God likes surprises too! Either way, when you go, God will show you the purpose He has for you, and I am sure that purpose will not only bless the people you share with, but it will bless you as well.

Again, we thank these four men for their obedience and we thank God for the purpose he had for each and every one of them!

Practice post by email

I am trying a tool I found in WordPress that allows me to post by email. I am hoping this is going to solve my connection problems when I try to post updates while in Haiti. I may not be able to post pictures through this method though, but at least I can update our friends and family on our blog. Let’s see if this works

Eddith’s Story

This morning I was listening to a song by Matt Redmond that sings praises to God through Psalm 84:10. As I sang along with the words, “Better is one day in your courts, better is one day in your house, better is one day in your courts than thousands elsewhere,” my heart rejoiced and my spirit agreed – YES! I would rather be in the presence of Jesus than anywhere else in the world. And guess what! I have that privilege every single day because Jesus is with me constantly. The miracle of a soul reborn is a mystery that many identify with, and yet there are so many more who question whether or not it is real or simply in the imagination of the believer. I have thought of this dichotomy many times, and I have come to realize that there are professing Christians who SAY they believe but do not experience the victory of a life with Jesus, and these give the skeptics reason to believe it is not real. However, when you meet someone who really does know and love Jesus, there is no doubt about it – that person is a new creation in Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” When I read this verse, I see that Paul says IF anyone is in Christ.  In other words, the test of a true Christian is whether or not he is a totally different person than he would be if he were not a Christian. Christ changes a person completely. This week, I met a lady who exemplifies the changing power of Jesus in not just a person’s actions, but in the very spirit of that person.

Eddith Salomon

This beautiful woman is Eddith Salomon. She is the aunt of the lady who cooks for teams here at Hope Center, Esther. Eddith is a new Christian, and I wanted to share her story with you because she is an example of the miracle of rebirth that is ONLY found in Christ. I have spoken with many unbelievers and skeptics in my lifetime, but when you come across someone like Eddith, there is no explanation for the complete turn around she has experienced except for a supernatural miracle from God. Nothing can change a heart like Jesus can!

Eddith grew up in the church with her family. However, when she was 14 years old, she decided that she was tired of being forced to go to church and she wanted to make a way for herself on her own. The deep lines in her face recall the pain she feels as she explains, “I was seeking things to please ME. I was such an angry person.” So she left her family and moved to Leoganne. She began to live a promiscuous life with many men who would support her. She began to drink heavily and use drugs. She didn’t realize it then, but the substance abuse was just a way of escaping her pain. She couldn’t be happy on her own. She required drugs and alcohol to feel good, and these things were destroying her life without her knowing it. She eventually met some people in the Voodoo church who taught her that if she gave her life to Satan, he would help her get the material things she wanted in life. She devoted her life to Voodoo and decorated her house with grotesque, distorted images on the wall that were meant to control evil spirits. She said these things would keep evil spirits from controlling her and she could call on them to do whatever she wanted that was evil. Little did she know, she was the one being controlled, and she sank deeper and deeper into a dark and desperate pit. Eddith eventually had two boys. She provided them with a large house, land, nice clothes and other things, and an education. She had become successful, but she was very unhappy.

On January 10th, 2010, everything changed for Eddith. While her boys were at school, Eddith was at home going through her morning routine. Suddenly, the walls of the house began to rattle, and everything around her was shaking. All of Haiti was being rocked by a terrible earthquake. She watched a crack form in her wall and make its way to the floor. She braced herself  to keep from falling as the floor of her house rocked back and forth and up and down. Suddenly, as the ceiling began to crumble, she dashed out the door of her house, hearing the rumble and cracks as it began to fall into a heap on the ground. Recalling her thoughts at that time she said, “I refused to die because I didn’t want to go to Hell and I didn’t want to leave my boys.” She fell to her knees and cried out to God to save her. “At that moment I gave my life completely to God.” In her despair, her thoughts quickly turned to her boys. She rushed to the school to find her children safe and unharmed from the earthquake. She praised God for keeping her family safe in the destruction. In the days ahead, Eddith found that she had lost everything she owned materially. She lost her home, everything in it, her money, her clothes….everything. However, she did not feel alone. “No matter what the difficulty, Jesus never leaves me alone,” Eddith explained. The earthquake took everything I had, but God allowed me and my children to escape harm. Now she sees how God used that terrible event to completely change her life as she says, “Everything I lost I had received from the devil, therefore I lost nothing and gained everything I needed!” Now she lives a completely different life. “I will never go back to that life,” Eddith affirms. “I was such an angry person, but Christ saved me and now I have peace and joy! Without Jesus I would now be crazy! I was smart to go to Jesus because I know He will give me everything I need for every day.”

Eddith now lives from day to day, trusting God to provide what she and her boys need to survive. Some might see this as a terrible existence, but Eddith knows how it feels to live her life apart from God. She has no desire to return to the life she once had. Before the earthquake, she had many material possessions, but she did not have peace and joy. Now, she has few material possessions, but she is happier than she has ever been in her life. It has been two years since her boys have been in school because she does not have the income to pay for their school. However, Eddith is trusting God to make a way for her boys to return to school one day. “Christ supplies all we need,” Eddith says with a smile on her face. I have no regrets now because what Satan meant for harm, God has turned into blessing, and I have faith that He will provide all we need.”

I am encouraged as I recall Eddith’s words while we sat on the front steps of my house, a light rain splashing upon our cheeks as we lift our hands and praise God for His blessings. The rain increased and we moved inside and continued to share many stories of how God has blessed both of our lives because we put our trust in Him.

“I will never go back to that life,” Eddith affirms. “I was such an angry person, but Christ saved me and now I have peace and joy! Without Jesus I would now be crazy! I was smart to go to Jesus because I know He will give me everything I need for every day.”

God is Glorified

Hallelujah! I am FINALLY able to get logged in to post to my blog! I have been trying off and on for many days and kept getting an error message from Safari. Meanwhile, the things I want to say are mounting and mounting and mounting!! Okay, here goes….

First of all, To God be the GLORY, for the storm!! While we all watch the weather reports intently, we have 7 families on the hill up there who are rejoicing that, as the wind gusts and the rain falls, their walls are not flapping and their floor is not turning to mud!! It is as if God is saying to them, “See, I told you I would provide a safe, sound place for you….now watch this!” They are so happy to be in their new homes and fellowshipping with their other friends from the tent city who have moved out to the country with them. They are making their houses into homes, and their children are getting to know children from the village. It’s a wonderful sight to see. I do want to share about the first family that moved in. There are two teenage girls in this family and I quickly picked up on a little sadness in their faces as I met them. I asked Vladimir to help me explain to them that I know how it feels to have to leave your friends that you love and have lived with for so long and move to an unusual place. I have recently had to leave my friends and family and move thousands of miles from them to a place where I don’t even speak the language. But I assured them that God has a plan, and that we can all be thankful that He is going to bless us in this move together. As I spoke with the girls, the 15 year old’s eyes teared up and the tears spilled over and ran down her face. I knew that God had given me a discernment into her heart and I was speaking to her pain. I hugged her and kissed her on the cheek, just like I have done with so many other teens God has placed in my life, and assured her that things would be okay. About an hour later, one of her best friends arrived (below in pink) and she was a completely different person – ALL SMILES. God is so good. He knows our hearts and He prompts us to care for one another. Thank you Jesus!! Here are some faces from day one of the move:Image

This mother was dancing so much I could hardly get the picture. She is THRILLED to be here! God is good!

ImageToday through Monday we will be working to help them get settled in. But God Ministries provides them with food for one month and beds. We are running low on beans and beds, so we will be heading into market after Tony gets finished seeing patients to take care of these things.

Speaking of Tony and the clinic….every day Tony has had patients show up around 8:00 for medical care. He has treated about 15 people a day. I will share a couple of stories:

One day an elderly man came in with a horrible injury to his face. He explained that his bull had charged him and cut his face with his horn. His cheek bone was swollen and he was bleeding pretty badly in three places. Tony got him all cleaned up and prayed with him. Three days later, the man returned for a check up. The swelling was down, the cuts looked as if they had occurred weeks ago instead of days, and he had a huge smile on his face. On another day, Vladimir and I had to run the clinic because Tony was in bed sick. Another elderly man came in and had terrible swelling in the feet and ankles and was hurting all over. Tony told us what to do for him and then we prayed with him. As I prayed, I held his foot in my hand and gently rubbed his ankles. When I finished, he said, “Thank you,” then put his other foot in my lap and said, “Now pray for this one too.” God bless him! He returned several days later with very little swelling, not walking with his cane anymore, and feeling much better. He too had a huge grin on his face. Then two days ago, Tony had a clinic full of people, and two of them were pregnant ladies. One of the ladies was 7 months pregnant. As Tony reported that her baby was healthy and growing, he showed her where its head was and where its bottom was. She was amazed and said, “How do you know?” Then he said, “Here, I want to show you something,” and he put the stethoscope on her belly and she listened to her baby’s heartbeat. She was absolutely AMAZED. Of course, my sweet Tony had tears rolling down his face as he listened again to the baby’s heart beating a healthy drum beat in her round belly. It was a beautiful moment, and God blessed them both. I could go on and on, but there is much more to tell…

The work began on the orphanage on August 13th as we were leaving for Cap Haitian for Jacob’s soccer games. There were about 30 men – all local men from the village who are very thankful to be working – and they were marking off the buildings with string in the dirt. When we returned from Cap Haitian on August 17th, all four foundations were formed and walls were going up on all four buildings. These men work so hard and are so productive. They enjoy their work too! Every day you can hear them down at the bottom of the hill singing and laughing and talking while they work. It’s a joy to watch and hear. I am posting a couple of pictures of their progress as of a couple of days ago. It’s amazing what can happen in just 10 days!

An update on Jacob…Jacob is catching on to this Creole language with amazing speed. He carries his book around and studies all the time. He also uses an app he has to help him with common phrases. I love hearing him and G (one of our security guards) outside laughing and talking in Creole together. He is doing fantastic and seems to be loving life here. This week, he showed out with some carpentry skills we didn’t know he had. He and Tony had started working on the shelves and bar for his closet one morning, but Tony was quickly pulled away to see patients. I went to check on Jacob, and he said he really wanted to finish the project himself, but he was afraid Dad wouldn’t want him to. I told him that if he felt confident in what he was doing and he could do it safely, then go for it! That’s all he needed. He got after that wood with the circular saw and before we knew it, he had five shelves built, the bar for hanging clothes installed, and was organizing his things in his closet. We were so proud of him. He was pretty proud too. I told him that I was going to give him a shop credit for all the work he has been doing around here. After all, he’s learning as he works, and he is doing a great job with it. He might as well get credit for it!! Ha! Jacob is also enjoying getting to know new friends around here. He took up with a kid named Bikly last week when a team was here from Virginia. Bikly is a young guy who rides up on his donkey quite often. He is very friendly and loves Jacob. A few days ago, Bikly rode up on his donkey and there was a baby donkey tagging along beside him. Jacob asked Bikly about the baby donkey, and Bikly said that his mother plans to sell it. Today, Jacob has arranged for Bikly and his mother to come talk to Tony about two things….one – about some surgery that Bikly may have to eventually have and how some members of the Great Bridge, VA, team want to help him with that, and two – about purchasing the baby donkey. Jacob wants a donkey of his own so he can ride up into the mountain area and explore with Bikly. He’s pretty excited about this pending purchase. I’ll let you know how that goes…. Ha! Another friend that Jacob has made is a guy named Jimmy. Jimmy is almost 15 and is one of the new kids who just moved in up the hill. Jimmy knows a good bit of English, so he and Jacob are able to communicate very well. They seemed to hit it off great. They exchanged phone numbers and Jacob and Jimmy text back and forth all the time now. So now Jacob walks around with not one but two phones. He has one phone to text through Kik with his American friends, and he has his Haitian phone to text with his new Haitian friends! These kids over here love to text as much as our American kids. Ha! When I posted about the trip to Cap Haitian, I didn’t have time to post pictures, so here are a few from the trip:

Well, that’s all I have time for today. I’ve been inside all day and I really need to get out in our garden. The garden, by the way, is growing at warp speed. We have zucchini, cucumbers, cantaloupe, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, avocado, onions, and several herbs growing. We have already eaten several watermelons from our garden, and are also growing a pineapple, bananas, purple hull peas, and plantains. I look forward to the day when almost all of our food comes from the land we live on!

Oh, and one more thing…a report on Isaac from Haiti – All we have had today is a few gusts of wind and some spray-like rain. I hear a few rumbles of thunder in the distance, and the sky is getting pretty cloudy. It doesn’t feel like a hurricane though. We are thankful for the rain, and the sky doesn’t look threatening at all. As a matter of fact, God’s Word says that everything in creation bows down to Him who created the Heavens and the Earth. It also says that He has given us authority, through Jesus, to do all that Jesus did and more. Just as Jesus commanded the seas to become calm, we too can command this storm to dissolve. Therefore, we have commanded this storm to stay away from us. We have commanded it to dissolve in its own path and not touch a soul in this village. We are believing him for this and He is doing just that even as we speak. The last time I checked the weather channel, the storm had pushed  far to the west and is bypassing Haiti altogether. The most we are expected to get is some outer squalls of maybe 60 mph at the most. I really don’t expect to see that either. God is glorified in our prayers, in our actions, in our faith that he indeed can and will move mountains when we truly believe….and the West family has certainly seen and experienced enough to truly believe!! To God be the GLORY!! Amen!!

We love you all so much, and we thank you for following the blog. Please keep us in your prayers as well as our village of Gallet Chambonne in Ganthier, Haiti. We are very honored and blessed to be here.

Mickie
